I’m looking for advice on restoring and maintaining BMWs from the 80s—90s particularly E30 & E34. I’m planning a project over the next year to surprise my father with a classic in his collection & maybe personally use it occasionally. I’m still at the research stage and trying to understand what getting into one of these cars actually looks like in terms of cost, maintenance, and reliability. I would really appreciate advice on a few things: • What is a realistic budget to buy and properly restore or maintain one • Which models or engines from that era tend to be the most reliable • Common problems I should expect with cars this old • Preventative maintenance that should be done right after buying • Mods that are worth it and mods I should avoid • Where people usually source parts for these cars • Honest and reliable garages in KL/Selangor, especially ones that won’t take advantage of someone young and new to this • General do’s and don’ts for someone starting their first classic BMW project I’m trying to learn as much as possible before committing so I don’t make expensive mistakes. Any advice, personal experiences, or recommendations would really help. Thank you.
